A chance to pause, reflect and look ahead
When we think about our health, we often focus on eating well, exercising and taking time to recharge. Yet one area that has a profound impact on both our mental and physical wellbeing is often overlooked – our financial health.
Financial Awareness Day, on 14 August, offers a timely reminder to pause, step back and reflect on our relationship with money and to ask whether our finances are supporting the life we want to live.
Financial pressure doesn’t discriminate
It’s easy to assume that financial stress only affects those who are struggling financially. In reality, money worries exist across every income level.
For some, concerns centre around rising household costs, saving for the future or unexpected expenses. For others, the questions are different but no less significant: Am I making the right investment decisions? Will my wealth last? How do I balance supporting my family while protecting my own future? Am I leaving the legacy I want to?
Financial planning isn’t about how much money you have; it’s about having clarity and confidence in the decisions you make.
That’s reflected in research,1 which found that 62% of UK adults have financial worries. Among those, 79% said those concerns affect their mental wellbeing, while 29% reported experiencing both mental and physical symptoms, including disrupted sleep, headaches and other stress-related health issues.
The findings reinforce something many people already know instinctively: when money feels uncertain, it’s difficult for other parts of life not to be affected.
Clarity builds confidence
Good financial planning shouldn’t leave people feeling confused or intimidated.Research2 found that 50% of UK adults say financial jargon puts them off investing or doing more with their money, rising to 56% among 25 to 34-year-olds. At the same time, 68% said they wanted to make their money work harder but felt held back by complicated language rather than a lack of ambition.
Whether you’re investing for the first time or managing substantial assets, everyone deserves advice that’s straightforward, transparent and explained in plain English.
Your financial health deserves the same attention as your physical health
Most of us book health checks, visit the dentist or make time to exercise because we know prevention is better than cure. Our finances deserve the same approach.
Regular financial reviews can help ensure your plans still reflect your goals, your family circumstances and the life you want to build. It can also provide reassurance that you’re on track or highlight opportunities you may not have considered. With many of us taking a little more time over the summer, Financial Awareness Day is the ideal prompt to reflect and get organised.
A conversation, not a lecture
Financial planning should never feel overwhelming or filled with jargon. It should leave you feeling informed, reassured and confident about the future.
Whether you’re taking your first steps towards financial security or navigating the responsibilities that come with accumulated wealth, the principles remain the same: understand where you are today, know where you want to go and have a plan to help you get there.
This Financial Awareness Day, take the opportunity to reset, reflect and ask the questions that matter. Financial wellbeing isn’t about having all the answers – it’s about having the confidence to start the conversation.
